Working with Brands

Here’s an unpopular view – I don’t think that I want to work with brands. 

Ok, so, I’m not saying I never want to build relationships or collaborate or anything like that. That’s not true at all. But, to be totally honest, my goals have nothing to do with becoming an influencer. This is probably why I’ll never be a super famous blogger who writes content for a living, but then, I don’t think I’d like that anyway. 

The fact is, as with anything you are passionate about, if you do too much of it you’ll end up resenting it. (E.G. Studying English at university. It was so interesting and so great but it destroyed my ability to just sit and read a book without analysing everything. Arguably as bad as it is a good thing.) 

I love writing content. I do that in my career and I do that in my spare time, but they’re so vastly different from each other and I don’t know if I’d like the two to mix. I’m not saying never, but at the very least, not right now. 

I’m more than happy to share my favourite purchases from here and there, but the concept of freebies and money for posts seems so far fetched. It also just feels a bit fake. I know, there are a lot of people who write super honest reviews, which is amazing and good on you, but I still can’t get my head around the fact that you’re being paid to do it. I think personally, I would find it difficult to criticise something if someone has paid me for it. Surely that would have a negative effect on your relationships with brands? And it’s definitely very obvious when someone ‘bigs up’ a brand when they’re probably not all that great. 

I just don’t want to be an influencer in the selling sense. I want to share ideas, stories, opinions and I want to get to know likeminded people. I definitely want to inspire and help people. I don’t want to have a blog that is constantly focusing on what new product you absolutely need to buy. 

I also want to remain real. Within the realms of what I deem acceptable to write about for myself, I want to feel comfortable writing about my (sometimes controversial) opinions and insecurities – I want to show the ugly truth. I don’t want to be afraid to click ‘publish’ in case I lose a few followers. 

There are some very amazing bloggers out there, creating near perfect content, who are ignored in favour of those who recommend a certain bronzer or eyeliner. I’d probably go so far as to say that there are cliques in the blogging community – and in my experience, it’s those who support each other and don’t compare following etc that are the bloggers I would rather see more of. 

Blogging shouldn’t be competitive and to an extent I think it shouldn’t be a numbers game. If you blog purely for influencing and collaborating, I think that’s great for you, but that’s just not what I want to do. If I write about a brand, even in collaborations, it’ll be because I want to. Not because I’m going to get anything out of it. 

So yeah, unpopular opinion is out there for all to see. I’m a blogger, I love it, but I don’t see working with brands as a particularly important goal.
